Winner of Jury Special Price

Marine Estrangin is an illustrator. After two years working on the archaeological site at Karnak in Upper Egypt where she draughted inscriptions, in 2004 she joined the team of the Centre d’Etudes Alexandrines. From her arrival, exhilarated by the atmosphere and sights of the bustling city, she sketched on the spot her chance discoveries, from the citadel of Qaitbay to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, from the European cemeteries to the banks of the Mahmoudeya Canal, the fishing boats, the churches, mosques and the gardens of the town. This film presents a selection of Marine’s work that appeared in her “Alexandria Scrapbook” published by Harpocrates.
A commentary drawn from travellers’ accounts from the 12th to the 19th century, including the words of William of Tyre, Theophile Gautier, Robert Curzon and many others, bring the drawings to life.
